please don't overtly talk about piracy!

I was (and still am) quite a Pokemon nerd, but if there's one thing I learned as an emudev is that there are a ton of great games out there besides Pokemon. There are a ton of people who only use emulators to play Pokemon once again, and while this is fine, they're missing out on a lot. Dealing with all sorts of issues with different games opened by eyes a bit in the regard (for Wario Ware to give an example). Also Pokemon popping up so often is also a bit tiresome…

And there's this stupid Pokemon freeze which needs to be fixed and it annoys me so much arg! arg! arg!

In general if you need recomendation on which games to play for any system I can recommend /v/'s Recommended Games wiki (it seems like for every mega ton of trash something worthwhile comes from 4chan)

you did it again, don't admit you're pirating and don't talk about pirate sites. Contrary to popular belief independent emulation and piracy are two separate issues. And for this to stay this way we need to keep it clean.

It's an open secret that emulators and piracy are intertwined, but we can't endorse piracy as an emulator, which means we can't give people a platform who directly link to piracy.

Pushing all questions of preservation, practicality and moral besides, the only legal way to access ROMs is to dump them from your private collection of games. You don't need to pretend you're doing it, just keep the acquisition of your ROM files out of the picture.

1. So maybe I can talk about the DS games I like on this website as long I do not speak about topics, related to the P word or R word?

there's not much more to say. You don't need to say "the p word", it's not a slur, you don't need to pretend it doesn't exist (the same even more for ROM as it's a completely neutral word as long it's not in a sentence with "where can I find free romzz" ;) ). Just don't mention places which host ROMs they don't have the legal right to host or admit you're visiting them and use common sense.

2. I would be interested to learn more from you about how independent emulation and the P word are different types of issues. Could this be the reason why most emulation sites create engines for games but not actually provide stuff, related to the R word?

yes. On some shady sides you might see emulator download links right next to ROMs (downloading software from a secondary source is always a bad idea anyway), but anybody who developes an emulator and doesn't want to receive a cease and desist letter doesn't distribute or link to files which they don't have the right to.

3. You seem to be a pretty open person who likes to try out different games besides the usual popular titles, so I would be interested to know what DS games you like too?

Unfortunately I have to disappoint you here, as I don't really have a sophisticated taste for video games (half of the time I'm playing Tetris :) ). I spent a surprisingly small amount of time in actually playing video games and I haven't really played many DS games besides Tetris DS.

can you try again with the latest source from git? Arisotura fixed a bug which could be related to this

you can also just use the export backup memory function in desmume to get a savefile compatible with melonDS

oh sorry, I wasn't paying enough attention. The hex editor I'm using is hxd. There you can press Edit -> Select Block then you enter 20000 as the start offset and 40000 as the end offset then press ok. This should have selected the upper half. Then press backspace to remove it. Then save the file. You might need to confirm something inbetween.

This is really not that convienent nor bearable for every end user to perform this. We should provide a better way of importing desmume saves.

local wireless depends on very low latencies which makes things like this not possible

we haven't forgotten about this issue. What makes issues like this so hard to fix is that it's very hard to determine what exactly is the root cause of this problem.

Btw gba carts (and the Boktai light sensor) are already supported since the last release, though no other peripherals.

we determine the save type based on it's size, which sometimes leads to problems like this. We plan to add an option to import savefiles which trims them automatically.

I finally managed to reproduce the issue, though I still don't have a clue what's causing it

you can connect to an alternative wifi server like this one: http://pkmnclassic.net/ and then you just need to exchange your friendcodes

we currently don't have an scripting or game debugging support which make things like this possible.

Relevant github issue:

I see now, the problem is probably that with builds with JIT recompiler enabled we allocate the memory used for most emulated RAM in quite a funky way for fast memory. So MainRAM, etc. are neither statically allocated nor on the normal heap anymore. You can find them by following a pointer (e.g. main RAM or shared WRAM)

do you use melonDS 0.9? Then you don't need to connect via ethernet anymore if you use indirect mode (which is far less error prone).
