blackmagic3 merged! Jan 31st 2026, by Arisotura |
|
After much testing and bugfixing, the blackmagic3 branch has finally been merged. This means that the new OpenGL renderer is now available in the nightly builds. Our plan is to let it cool down and potentially fix more issues before actually releasing melonDS 1.2. So we encourage you to test out this new renderer and report any issues you might observe with it. There are issues we're already aware of, and for which I'm working on a fix. For example, FMVs that rely on VRAM streaming, or Golden Sun. There may be tearing and/or poor performance for now. I have ideas to help alleviate this, but it'll take some work. There may also be issues that are inherent to the classic OpenGL 3D renderer, so if you think you've encountered a bug, please verify against melonDS 1.1. If you run into any problem, we encourage you to open an issue on Github, or post on the forums. The comment section on this blog isn't a great place for reporting bugs. Either way, have fun! |

| Arisotura All DS roms won't run in DSi mode, It worked back on 0.9.5 and now on 1.1 DS games won't run in DSi mode, Can you please try to fix that before releasing 1.2? |

| It was a pleasure to help fixing bugs in Bowser's Inside Story (still can't believe how many bugs were in that game). Something I did not mention is that before, on more than 1x resolution on the OpenGL renderers, there was slowdown on certain points where you got a fancy flashing light (like when you are in those minigames where you increase Bowser's strength) but thanks to this, it has been a smooth 60fps even on those previous choke points. I'll continue to play through the game and see if we missed anything, but I'm very optimistic about the results. Great work on this! |

Arisotura: "The comment section on this blog isn't a great place for reporting bugs." First comment: Reports a bug Nice job MattGrey2000 Also the issue you reported is false, so you better make a forum post and someone will probably help you |

| Speaking of issues that are inherent to the classic OpenGL 3D renderer, whenever I increase the internal resolution to anything above 1x native, the screen filtering gets disabled for some reason. I'm not sure why this happens, but it affects both OpenGL (Classic) and OpenGL (Compute shader). |

hey, calm down guys DJT: that's normal, increasing the IR increases the resolution everything is rendered at, including 2D elements, and there's no 2D filter for now |

"DJT: that's normal, increasing the IR increases the resolution everything is rendered at, including 2D elements, and there's no 2D filter for now" OK, but are there any plans for implementing a 2D filter for higher resolutions in the future (if it's possible)? In some games, like Super Mario 64 DS and New Super Mario Bros., the choice seems to be either between filtering the 3D graphics (by increasing the resolution) or filtering the 2D graphics (by using screen filtering at 1x native resolution). |

| Thank you for the continued work on this project. I remember the times where my options for DS Emulation were so jank and limited... your endeavour to make a great DS/DSi emulator means a lot. |

Thanks you so much for your hard work! You are basically doing what Nintendo Nintendon't, this emulator is amazing! Can't wait for the day it has full per-game setting! Also JstDen, the Android port of MelonDS has a nightly version too, here it is: https://github.com/rafaelvcaetano/melonDS-android/releases just click on the pre-release APK build and you are good to go! It hasn't been updated for a week however, because it takes a bit of time to port these additions. |

I think my old acct got deleted, so i made a new one just to say Great job, Lego Games can finally run at higher resolutions without the 2D graphics disappearing. We love to see it. |
