Not much to say lately...
Yeah...

I guess real life matters don't really help. Atleast, my mental health is genuinely improving, so there's that.

But as far as my projects are concerned, this seems to be one of those times where I just don't feel like coding. Well, not quite, I have been committing some stuff to melonDS... just not anything that would be worthy of a juicy blog post. I also had another project: porting my old SNES emulator to the WiiU gamepad. I got it to a point where it runs and displays some graphics, but for now I don't seem motivated to continue working on it...

But I still have some ideas for melonDS.

One idea I had a while ago: using the WFC connection presets to store settings for different altWFC servers. For example, using connection 1 for Wiimmfi, connection 2 for Kaeru, etc... and melonDS would provide some way of switching between them. I don't know how really useful it would be, or how feasible it would be wrt patching requirements, but it could be interesting.

Another idea would be RTCom support. Basically RTCom is a protocol that is used on the 3DS in DS mode to add support for analog sticks and such. It involves game patches and ARM11-side patches to forward input data to RTC registers. The annoying aspect of this is that each game seems to have its own ARM11-side patch, and I don't really look forward to implementing a whole ARM11 interpreter just for this.

But maybe input enhancements, be it RTCom stuff or niche GBA slot addons, would make a good use case for Lua scripting, or some kind of plugin system... I don't know.

There are other big ideas, of course. The planned UI redesign, the netplay stuff, website changes, ...

Oh well.

Take your time then, not like you can force yourself to feel motivated. Sure, whenever we need to do something, its important to crack away at it, but this is no such case. If in a passion project, there is no more passion, what's the point, y'know? I've been in that state before, and it just makes it worse to try and force myself. I find myself getting re-motivated whenever I'm thinking idly, say, in the shower, and a genius thought sparks off in my head that feels like it connects an essential component that I didn't know existed, if that makes sense. Maybe you'll see that, or maybe you just need to dock for a while; refill on brain-cargo.
Anyhow, wish you the best. Hope you have a good day now partner.

Take your time brother. Just coming to your project today, and I really appreciate the work you have done. The most important thing is to just take each day at a time and do what you need to do for yourself first.

Aight then, I'll provide my own update for funsies. (I'm nowhere near as experienced a programmer). Right now I'm working on a game creator in Rust. It would be waaay easier in a scripting language, but I hate myself enough to try. The premise is giving the user some prebuilt lego-like code bricks that they can assemble however they please. However, the usual method of matching tokens to commands was slow and exceedingly verbose and unmanageable. So, I did some research...

I found a cool idea I'm trying to implement where each subfunction takes the next function as an argument. This can, if done correctly, coerce the compiler to actually generate modular bits of assembly, that when assembled together at runtime form basically compiled code.

I'm still very early in the project and its very tricky, but I'm excited to see if I can get it to work

Super excited to see RTCom support if that ever happens, would genuinely be the best way to play SM64DS

I'd absolutely love 3DS control stick integration.

Ideas and motivation to code don't come out of nowhere. Sometimes the best thing you can do is take a break so that at least you can come back to it at a later time with a clearer mind. Suda51 once said making a game is like taking a shit, and I'd add that trying to push it out by straining is just gonna give you hemorrhoids lol I love MelonDS and I'm very thankful for all the work you've already put into this project, the emulator is already very solid and I don't think me and others are going to stop enjoying it just because there's no new stuff for a while. Don't burn out, give yourself enough time so that you can prioritize yourself and what makes you happy :D

Take your time bro, it's okay if you're not feeling motivated. Remember to take a break, make yourself happy, i love MelonDS and i would like to see how it would go in the future. Thanks for making this emulator, stay safe :)

RTC support with left, right analog sticks, gyro and additional shoulder buttons would be wow. Groundbreaking. It would be like a new DS Generation with patch support to upgrade your ds games. Like near did with msu-1 on the snes emulation scene. Awesome work.

Hi!

I've been a big fan of your work so far, and you've managed to pull off incredible stuff like being able to separate the entire game between two windows. When I saw that in 1.0 RC, I was actually flabbergasted and overjoyed to see it finally possible.

MelonDS has been my go-to for whenever I want to stream DS games, and hearing that it might even have netplay is *mind-boggling.*

The only thing I'd have left to ask is if there's a chance on earth you'd be able to implement Dualshock 4/Dualsense touchpad support for emulating the DS's touch screen; if that were a reality, I'd go berserk playing Rhythm Heaven all day every day. If not, I'd be more than happy to use DSX's Touchpad Mouse pass-through option in the meantime.

the WFC presets do sound really cool and convenient. but is that really something an emulator can just do?
