Title says it all, I wonder if there is a way to achive this. Me and my friend both love playing Pokemon. However, we cant battle eachother without running into the general Wiimmfi problems. (He actually cant connect at all.)

Is there a way to emulate local wireless communications over LAN? I feel like I've seen it done before.

You can use hamachi or whatever else. Won't work very well, though. WFC is far more stable.

The only game I got to work online via radmin vpn or another vpn software is Medarot DS and even then its unstable...
But at least it connects and reaches gameplay over the internet unlike all the other games i tried lol.

Both these options sound like they will make a private alternative to Wiimmfi. As stated before, my friend cant seem to connect to any alternative online server. Though I appreciate the input. I will definitely save these options for when they come in handy.

what error does your friend get on Wiimmfi?
local wireless currently is unstable even on the same network - so forget about it over the internet, it's just not possible yet.

We've had a variety of different codes. I dont quite remember them all. Though from what I've seen Wiimmfi seems to refuse his connection.

If you'll give me a moment I can ask him what error he gets.

I've checked with my friend. He's not quite certain but according to him the code is 51200.

That is not the case. It allows you to use local multiplayer emulation over the internet.

I see, forgive my previous comment then. I will try to connect our emulators through these a soon as I can.

My best guess would be that it is an issue with the wireless communication system in the game. AFAIK The game launches into local Wi-Fi mode when entering the underground, so you can see nearby players walk around and do stuff, as well as secret bases. I would guess that MelonDS does not quite know how to emulate local wireless connections as I too am struggling to get a local connection set up between me and a friend. However this guess may as well be useless as its perfectly possible to have a second instance of MelonDS running parallel to the original instance and to have the two find each other in places like the union room. I personally use this method to clone make backups of my favorite Pokémon on a second save file.

I'm a bit late. Sorry!

Hey, I'm Bass_PHOX. But you may call me Phoxy. I'm a 20 year old girl with a passion for code. I'm particularly drawn to Nintendo Romhacking and similar stuff. I spend most of my time browsing the internet for tools I can use to burst open my favorite games so I can modify them to my liking.

More about me outside of gaming, I'm a bit on the lewd side. But don't expect that behavior on forums like these. I will try to keep it to a minimum.
I'm a Twitch streamer and a musician. I make electronic dance music (EDM) and suck at it.

Why am I here? MelonDS is my favorite DS emulator. Its already a really solid emulator as is, and I want to see it improve over time. That's why I joined the forum. I wish to help make MelonDS the best emulator it can be.

I hope this clarifies me as a person. If you wish to learn more about me, I'm always down for a chat. Feel free to send me a private message or add me on discord by clicking here. (Side note, if you do add me on discord. Let me know you're from the forum as I get a lot of un-solicited friend requests.)

Posted on 10-11-21 08:52 AM, in Question about mod support Link | #4566

Before I say anything, Please not that I am not very smart. So please forgive me if this is already possible or if its not.

I like to play around with mods. I do it alot on switch, Wii U 3DS and Wii. Switch and 3DS emulators like Yuzu and Citra offer easy mod support by simply dumping the RomFS files and then pasting the modified RomFS in the mods directory of the game. The emulator then loads the game, followed by the RomFS and applies the RomFS as patch.

Wii modding on emulators like Dolphin allow you to extract the disc image, Where you can then modify the contents and then load up the main.dol file of the modified game to play the game with the changes applied.

My question: How would one achieve this on MelonDS? Is it possible to dump the rom in anyway to a modifiable state, which can then be reloaded without making a new rom image?
I'd like to know since I'm planning on doing a Pokemon Diamond Nuzlocke, and since I wish to stream it, I thought it would be nice if I could for instance, modify the protagonist sprites to look like me, or switch out some music, ect.

Please let me know if this is possible, and if not, Please let me know what tools you'd reccommend to achive any of these results outside of melonDS.

Thanks in advance!

Depending on where you aquired your firmware files, it is entirely possible that your files might be modified in some way. It is best if you dump your own firmware files from an official Nintendo DS system. In the case you dont have these. I may be able to provide you with mine. I do not know of the rules of linking such files. So I will hold back for now.

I'm really not familiar with Pokémon hacking, but generic DS file browsers/editors do exist, like the previously mentioned (very old) NitroExplorer, Every File Explorer and Tinke.

I have done some research on Tinke. It is the better file explorer, exporter and importer for NDS files. However, it requires manual compilation. I'm probably perfectly capable of doing this, but I do not yet have all the software required. As a victim of several viruses, trojans and hack attacks, I do not think I need to elaborate on the fears I have for downloading software. I shall will however attempt at overcoming my fear as I did with the previously mentioned software. I shall simply assume its safe knowing that the greater part of the community uses these applications.

I've done some digging in the settings. As you can see, there is an option to toggle FPS limit.
However, I expect this to lock the emulated system to a framerate its physical counterpart would be capped at.

My suggestion would be Rivatuner. I use it to cap my Wii U emulation to 30FPS to reduce stutters. Perhaps it could help you in your problem.

Here are some instructions on how to use Rivatuner:
1) After installing, Open the program.
2) It may look like nothing is happening, Instead, look for a small monitor with a "60" on it. Click on it.
5) You should now see a new window open. Make an instance where frame limiting should be applied by clicking "add". It will ask you to select an executable. Navigate to the folder where MelonDS.exe is, and select MelonDS.exe.
6) Set Application detection level to high, then the frame limit to what you think is best.
7) Minimize the GUI.
8) Open MelonDS and boot into a game.

I hope this helps! If you have any questions, I'll try to respond as soon as possible.

So me and my friend finally got both our emulators online. We have registered eachothers friend codes and are both looking for players on Friends. The system can detect my friend being online. However it is not connecting us.

I do not understand what could be wrong here. Does anyone have any idea?

Posted on 10-18-21 03:57 PM, in How do you get dsiware games working Link | #4595

if you have DSiware files that you have aqquired losely. There is an alternative way to install them. Heres how.
1) Make sure MelonDS is in DSi mode. You will need access to the NAND files for any install to succeed.
2) Copy your DSi Ware titles to a folder on your desktop. You need to be able to find the file esily.
3) Open MelonDS, then under System, select Manage DSi Titles. (Image 1)
4) Select Import Title.
5) Select Browse for the executable file path. navigate to your DSi-ware title and select it. Supported file formats are .app, .nds, .dsi and .srl
6) If you dont have a proper Title-ID. You will need to provide your own metadata file. Select TMD from file and navigate to the .TMD file for the app. (Image 2) Always use this option if a metadata file came with the DSi-ware.
7) Click OK. if you did things right, your new installed title will show up on the list. You can now proceed to boot into the DSi Firmware.

as far as I know MelonDS can emulate all DSi-ware titles with the exception of those that heavily rely on the camera. I hope this helps
if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I will try to respond immediately.

Posted on 10-25-21 11:06 AM, in Help! Firmware.bin on DSi without a flashcard Link | #4624

If you are using a DSi system, you can use the homebrew method to open CFW. If you do not have CFW installed yet, I will embed a video below. This video will guide you through installing CFW on your DSi. You WILL need an SD-card for this to work. Remember that installing Unlaunch has a chance of bricking your DSi System. But the chances are minimal.

Please follow this guide to install CFW:

After installing CFW to your system, you will need a firmware dumper. If you plan on using DSi mode on MelonDS, you will need a dumper that supports DSi Nand dumping.

The developers of MelonDS reccomend this Dumper tool. Make sure your dumped Nand has the No$ footer.

Assuming you have dumped the files correctly you should find the following items on your SD-card:
- DSi ARM9 BIOS: 64KB
- DSi ARM7 BIOS: 64KB
- DSi Firmware: 128KB
- DSi NAND image: ~240MB
Now all you have to do is copy these files to a folder in your melonDS directory so you can easily find the files, then configure the emulator.

if instead you want the DS-firmware, you can use this Dumper tool instead. The process is relatively the same, except you will find these files on your SD-card instead:
- DS ARM9 BIOS: 4KB
- DS ARM7 BIOS: 16KB
- DS Firmware: 128/256/512KB
Now all you have to do is copy these files to a folder in your melonDS directory so you can easily find the files, then configure the emulator.

I hope this guide helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

Isn't RiiConnect for Wii?

RiiConnect is indeed for the Wii, however, the original WFC servers allowed for Wii and NDS systems to be connected to it. This its not weird the RiiConnect service could allow for NDS systems to work.

---

Me and a friend have had a similar issue a while ago. First we tried connecting my emulated copy of Mario Kart DS to his copy on a 2DS using TWiLightMenu++. Since it uses the NDS firmware already on his 2DS system, it should have had full compatibility. However, none of the internet connections around would allow the system to connect. The firmware was just too outdated. So instead we tried using his phone as a hotspot for Wi-Fi connections. We entered the settings correctly and then tried connecting. His phone then decided to eject the 2DS system from the hotspot. This lead us to try it on an emulator on his end too. We where at work at the time. Both machines where connected to the same network. Since he already owned a dump of the game, we simply moved it over to his computer. I then sent him my old NDS-Firmware and BIOS files. I was on newer DSi-Firmware and BIOS. The two emulated systems would connect to Wiimmfi. But refused to detect each other, even after registering each others friend-codes. I am honestly not surprised by this point that two instances of MelonDS cant find each other on Wiimmfi. I am however confused as to why. Even more so considering the fact that we later attempted it again. This time from our own machines. Connected to different networks. (for reference, we both live in different provinces.) We entered the DNS values to connect to Wiimmfi, double-checked our friend-codes and went online. This time it did match us up. We played several games without connection issues. Well, except for lag and desync as result of said lag. I remember my friend saying he saw me "Bounce all over the map".

I think MelonDS' online functionality still needs a bit of attention. I remember a post of the developer stating that on a technical side, Wi-Fi connection is done. It works. So I will not fault them. However, it could use a little touching up to work out some issues.

Most of the errors seem to come from people that got NAT/ISP issues.
Some people got issues with the DNS not being forwarded correctly or the ports that WFC uses are not used properly etc.

I wonder if there is any way to bypass said issues without too much external and/or technical modifications... Thoughts?

The only current workaround is using melonDS direct mode, it works 50/50 on all cases I tried helping someone dealing with the problem.

I do not think this will allow the user to bypass any ISP related isseus. However, this is a uselful bit of information.

Posted on 10-28-21 10:16 AM, in How to use the dumper on 3DS ? Link | #4638

If you wish to use the dumpers designed for the NDS(i)-Systems, then indeed. You will require a flashcard to boot into NDS(i)-mode. NDS-Bootstrap methods may work, but with some workarounds. I recommend in this case to use original NDSi hardware and install CFW on that. I have previously made a guide on how to do this here.

To be fair, you will need a NDSi-system for this. I am not acquainted at all with dumping firmware from a N3DS-system.
Flashcards are easy to acquire however. A quick google search for "R4 Gold 3DS" reveals various options that are decently cheap.
