I'm playing the hack of Definitive Edition (https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/5610/) of Castlevania - Dawn of Sorrow and everything is working fine, but...

Any save game will only properly load if I use the actual bios and firmware (bios9+7+firmware). Otherwise C-DoS complains about a corrupted save game and will reset everything. The built-in bios will not work.

Interesting issue. Do we know what the hack pulls from the firmware/BIOS when saving?

Oh, I don't know anything about that. But here is the exact xpatch (there are multiple variations of the hack) and my save game in case you need it.

Cv DoS DE+ (v2.3) (Full, Dignity Art).xdelta
Castlevania - Dawn of Sorrow (USA) [Definitive Edition+].sav

I just remembered that I had a similar problem with another game but at that time I thought I was just too dumb.

Metroid Prime Pinball (yes, there are dozens of us playing this gem) has the same problem. No mod/hack/anything applied. It only properly recognizes its own save file while using an external bios.

What happens if you save while using the internal BIOS? Does it just fail to save? Is the save recognized later?

Saving works fine in both games.

It's the switch from one to the other that breaks loading saves. Sorry, I should've made that clear. I was hung up on my own save file made with an external bios.

Maybe the saves are just tied to a specific console. Can you reproduce the issue in, say, DeSmuME?

No, the reason for this is 1) game forces CRC16 check on every load; 2) CRC16 generation was broken until being fixed in https://github.com/melonDS-emu/melonDS/commit/1b7b5106e24d1bad0776c97696f834209e30d900 which broke loading old saves. Also see https://drastic-ds.com/viewtopic.php?t=4243
And it seems impossible to redo the save with correct checksum. Theoretically, making save-state after loading with old, broken built-in bios and loading with new one or DSi-mode could fix that but emulator hangs when trying that. The only way to continue save seem to be reverting the patch and making broken-on-purpose build of the emulator.

Making a cheat to skip/change CRC check in the game or somehow letting it load the state between bioses could help. Or somehow generating new checksum and manually putting it in via a hex editor.

(I'm not the same guy, by the way)
