When trying to run my game through RetroArch I get a communication error when I press start in Pokemon Soul Silver, forcing me to use savestates. If I save my game at that point and open the file in standalone melonds, then all works as normal. I need to get it working through retroarch though as that is where I would rather play (its on my steam deck) and even if I were to get trading working on standalone (cant because of error 52200), I couldn't get the altered save back into retroarch as the savefile are useless in this state.

How to write an emulator
1. throw code to be emulated somewhere
2. make memory system that allows accessing that code
3. emulate CPU
4. have fun implementing all the other hardware

Retroarch is just out of date compared to upstream, this was fixed a while ago there. The onus is on Retroarch folks to pull upstream fixes.

To workaround this, you could simply just provide official firmware instead of relying on internally generated firmware (which is what's bugged here).

I have "3rd-party" bios and firmware, would that be the problem, and dumping my own would solve this? I plan on dumping my own today or tomorrow when I have the time anyways.

You probably have old hacked firmware which would have issues on real hardware too. Using your own dump would probably fix this.

Ok I'll try it later. The weird thing is I can use the same firmware on my windows PC and it works fine.
