Hi!

Can someone explain to me what a flashcart is and how to use it?

  1. It seems to be a physical chip used in game consoles. Does this mean I need to purchase one? Is there any kind of "digital" flashcart I could use instead?
  2. What difference will I notice when running a game with the BIOS and firmware that is recommended, compared to without, as I am doing now?
  3. The FAQ tells me BIOS and firmware are both required, but version 0.9.4 has a BIOS replacement. Does this mean I don't need to dump the BIOS file for version 0.9.4?

I am but a newborn babe in the world of emulation and would appreciate any and all answers you people could give me.

Kind regards,
Cantaloupe

1. Flashcarts are used to run arbitrary games/etc on your DS. Basically it's a cartridge that (most typically) takes a microSD card, on which you put games and such. Then when you start your DS, it will run a menu that lets you choose which game to run.

2. Using official BIOS/firmware dumps is more accurate and less likely to cause issues. However, you shouldn't run into issues with the default BIOS/firmware.

3. The FAQ prolly just needs a lil' update.

Thanks so much for your swift reply!

  1. Could you explain to me how to use these DS flashcarts to extract official files? Do I need to buy such a cartridge even though I want to play on my pc instead of a DS?
  2. I'm using the default BIOS and firmware and am running into an issue that might be because I'm not using official dumps. I'm playing randomized Pokemon White 2 and the video tends to freeze while the audio doesn't. It also seems to count inputs twice when this happens, which is especially frustrating in menu's. Could this be because I'm not using official dumps or is that hard to say?

There's very few bugs that happen because of the built in BIOS- it's not impossible that that bug emerges from FreeBIOS but it's very unlikely.

Honestly, what will probably help most is instructions on how to recreate that bug- including your PC's operating system, what settings you're using, what rando you're using and with what seed/options, etc.

I've also heard the C-Gear kinda fucks up some stuff (even if I dont remember anything related to video freezes soooo

Understood, thank you! I will make a new topic for that bug then.

Regarding that topic:
How thorough should I be regarding the settings I mention? I assume I won't have to share every setting under the Config menu?
Also is there an easy way to embed video files in posts like these? Or am I better off just embedding a youtube video of my issue?
