I used save states instead of in-game saving and now my save is ruined. Can someone please help me get it back? I will only use in-game saves once recovered.

make sure to disable separate savefiles. For me it crashes when loading while it is enabled (probably this issue we're investigating: https://github.com/Arisotura/melonDS/issues/1330 ), but works when it's off. ____________________ Take me to your heart / never let me go!
