Scene ROMs are pirated versions of ROMs. You can tell by simply looking at the file name. If it has a scene name like XenoPhobia, you are using a scene ROM. If there is no mention of scene group, you are using an no-intro/redump copy. So what is wrong with them? Well for starters the dump has a different CRC32 signature. To prove to you that this is true, I will be using a NukeThis copy of Toy Story 3 and a no-intro copy. First, lets look at the CRC32 signature of the Toy Story 3 ROM using ndsts for both versions.

The hash 641A1018 is the no-intro version while the hash FF156306 is the NukeThis ROM. In fact in melonDS, DSi mode won't boot pirated copies of ROMs as the system will crash. So how can I tell a scene release from no-intro?

1. Scene ROMs have a file name like this (5126 - game title (DSi Enhanced) (region)(scene group).nds while no-intro uses this (tittle (region) (available languages) (NDSi Enhanced).nds.
2. If it doesn't boot in DSi mode, its likely a scene release since they don't boot on a DSi.

Anyways, have a good day

yes, these ROMs fail to work because they're bad dumps

Yeah, you can even compare the CRC32, SHA1, MD5 and such on websites like datomatic.no-intro.org to discover from which release your ROM came if you downloaded it. Bad dumps comes with a variety of issues, sometimes simple issues like the header, and sometimes complicated issues like bad sectors or a outright missing section of the ROM. It's NEVER advised to use them since a lot of problems can occur while playing them.
You can also see some ROM info on melonDS in system > ROM info. Although, it still don't have info like CRC32, SHA1, MD5.
