As the title says. I export backup memory from Desmume as a raw sav file. The file size is exactly 524.288 byte or 512 KB. I run melonds, I press import save file and I get a "savefile shorter than sram". I cant find anything relevant on this forum or anywhere else when I google it. Any ideas?

Game is pokemon soul silver.

must be a bug, I recomend simply placing the exported .sav file in the same folder as the ROM and give the same name to both.
Example: example.nds and example.sav

I tried to do that multiple times, it doesnt work. I managed to do something similar at my work pc, but the house pc simply refuses to cooperate.

I wonder if just renaming the DeSmuME save file from .dsv to .sav and moving it to MelonDS's folder would be sufficient, without having to use the emulators' import and export features?

Yea, I just tested same save file on my work pc and its working just fine. Something's wrong with my home pc.

Now I will try to create a save state and transfer it back to my home pc. But I still dont understand why this is happening.

Actually, I think I know what's happening now. Probably they are in a restricted location, move your ROM and SAV to a non-restricted location, like the desktop or HDD/SSD root and then try again.

Having a similar but different issue… I export backup memory from Desmume as a raw sav file. I run melonds, I open the ROM which then gives me the option to “import sav file” …I press import save file and when I click on the raw .sav file, I get a warning message that says “the emulation will be reset and the current sa file overwritten”. …I click ok and what loads is the game but it’s all the way back at the beginning, not reflecting the load state I had pulled up when I initially exported the backup memory in the first place. Any thoughts?

try importing your desmume dsv savefile directly in melonDS without using export backup memory in desmume.

It sounds like your saying a .sav file already exists without me clicking "export backup memory" but I'm not sure where that file is or how to access it.

Here are the steps I take right now in Desmume:
1. I run Desmume by clicking the application file
2. I click File -> OPEN ROM and then click on the Pokemon Platinum .nds file I have
3. I click File -> LOAD STATE -> I select my latest load file which represents substantial progress in the game (5 gyms in with 38 plus hours on it)

...this is how I would pick up the game and continue where I left off in Desmume...

What I would LIKE to do is somehow take where I am at in the game on Desmume and be able to play it on MelonDS such that my state in the game is preserved and all that work isn't undone.

You probably didn't need all that information, I just wanted to be sure I shared in case it's helpful.

So if I have desmume open and the state loaded...what would I need to do to create this file WITHOUT leveraging "export backup memory" to create the file. Any thoughts on where it would be located??

Also- when you say import it directly into MelonDS, would the steps be:
1. Open MelonDS Application
2. Open ROM (same one I would grab in Desmume)
3. Click on Import Save File
4. then I would grap this .dsv file you mentioned at this point rather than a .sav file?

Thanks again for the help!

Thank you so much again, really appreciate it.

is it possible that you never properly saved in game in Pokemon?

Anything is possible!!

But if I have desmume open, I have gone to load state and selected my most recent version...so the game is where I want it to be at this point and it's on my screen. How do I capture this in a file that can be played in MelonDS? It's almost like when I try to open something up in MelonDS, it loses the "state" and just brings me back to the beginning.

Sorry if I'm talking in circles. I'm definitely about ready to give up here so grateful if you have a solution!

so I take that as a yes. You need to save in game, afterwards everything should work the way you've tried it before.

We generally recommend to not rely on savestates to permanently save your progress for a number of reasons. Not being compatible between emulators and also the real cartridge/flash carts is one of them. But they're typically not even compatible between emulator versions.
