Suppose that's fair, however for building a community running a discord server is probably still a good idea. Even if your not very active in it. Plus discord is has fairly good support for transferring code and working on projects so some of your devs might find it useful.

melonDS is one of the more popular DS emulators already. Not as much as DeSmuME yet, but still. I don't think a Discord would be necessary for it to catch on. I use Discord a ton, but I'm 100% fine with melonDS not having one. A forum is more suited for this kind of project, anyway, and if you absolutely must have a chat room, irc is there for that.

if a project is noteworthy and those who actually give a damn enough about getting the support properly want it, people will ask for support in the ways the developer intended, besides, Discord goes against the whole idea of open-source really... I can see why Ari is against using it on an ethical basis for an open source project, it just seems horribly unfitting lol

code sharing/etc. - that can more easily be done and also referred to later on in PMs on the board or on github gists/pastebins anyway... discord doesn't really make it easier plus the 2000 char limit.

Discord just encourages random idiots to spew the usual crap and has overall monopolised internet communities. might be a good thing for filtering out toxic requests and the like in that regard as all the lamers will just hang out there or reddit these days.

Neither IRC and Discord are perfect.
on one side you got a lot of privacy issues with Discord.
You can Read here for more : https://dev.to/daksh777/why-i-quit-using-discord-34b .
IRC is also not that well with privacy too because it discloses your IP address when you log into it (unless you use a thing got bouncer or a VPN).
So yeah there are both problematic in a way.

"IRC is also not that well with privacy too because it discloses your IP address when you log into it (unless you use a thing got bouncer or a VPN). "

It's not owned by corporates though, the only people that will probably threaten you with your IP are wannabe hax0r kids, and it's your own responsibility to hide it anyways. Discord on the other hand is a corporate and well, given its history of moderator abuse, sketchy rule implementations, and overall just being a terrible platform that mainly appeals to zoomers congregating in Twitter cancel culture, well...

IRC is also open and decentralized. the protocol is well documented, anyone could (with some effort) run their own IRC server, completely independently from any other server.

This is probably one of the most logical arguments for IRC. Sorta makes me think of how DALnet pioneered things like NickServ/ChanServ, while others were against the idea of things like that in the early IRC days - basically giving the person running a channel a choice. Unlike Discord.

The use of the word 'server' by Discord grinds me too, it's more like shared hosting than say running a VPS or dedicated server. The fact entire communities are now Discord-only these days really bothers me as it goes to show the whole 'tell you what to do with these limited options, pretend you can have freedom with said options and then boot you off when we don't like it' mentality that just seems to have been creeping up more and more since the past eight years or so.

How to write an emulator
1. throw code to be emulated somewhere
2. make memory system that allows accessing that code
3. emulate CPU
4. have fun implementing all the other hardware
