If I am using melonDS to trade with a normal ds on the same wifi, will I need to change the dns and everything?

If you are doing it over altwfc then yes, setting up the DS and melonDS should be the same. If you were intending to use local (DS-to-DS) wireless, that will not work and for annoying technical reasons probably never will.

Cant you use the Wii u virtual console as a base? It doesn't seem like It gave those devs any problems working out local multiplayer. I know they definitely had insider info but it was also outsourced.

Hi Nadia, can you elaborate on that? I have been following the DS emulation scene for about 15 years and I always wondered why the DS multiplayer is so difficult to emulate. It has become even more strange, if you considered that 3DS and even Switch multiplayer are at a very playable state, with Citra and Ryujinx LDN, respectively. I would appreciate if the melonDS team wrote an article on it. :)

I can think of two reasons why DS multiplayer emulation took so long to develop and is still not fully working. One, the dominant emulator DeSmuME had some sort of disagreement among it's development team, so the wifi was removed. And two, wifi emulation was completely pointless for a while because of the demise of Game Spy, which took down Nintendo DS's Wi-Fi Connection functions. That meant a method needed to be found to create an alternate connection, something MelonDS has succeeded with, allowing it to emulate wifi. But it's still early days.

3DS emulation of course never had such delays, so when games became playable, wifi was usable on Citra as well.
