im playing pokemon platinum and i cant figure out how to use the gba slot feature

Load the GBA game (you'll just get a blank screen), then load the DS game. If done correctly, the DS bios will have the option for "Start GBA game" available (though it doesn't work) instead of the "There is no Game Pak inserted" message, and then when you launch the DS game it will detect the GBA game.

Don't use DSi mode, the DSi doesn't have a GBA slot.
