#BlackLivesMatter
You may be aware of what's going on in USA. I'm not going to go in detail over this, but I'm going to state that I stand with the protesters. For the end of racist policing, for the end of capitalism.

Other than that, little status update on melonDS. We're going to merge the JIT branch for 0.9. I figured that it would be easier to merge the DSi branch first, so I've been updating it. I'm going to clean it up some and fix a few things to make it good for a release.

The Qt UI is also nearly complete. All that remains to be done is the cheat interface and taking care of VSync. The other issues have been solved, including the one where the final executable required 25 DLLs -- by using the qt5-static package for MSYS2, I managed to get it down to a standalone executable that is about 21MB in size.

Forgive the weird username for this (my conservative and religious sister is aware of my username, so this is to prevent it coming up in search results), but I know about trans stuff myself as I've been questioning myself for the last two decades, but have been forced to do so in secret as my family is quite conservative and religious and almost certainly wouldn't approve, and in school was commonly thought of as being gay. In the last year or so I've finally come to the conclusion that I'm simply "androgynous" and am similarly not into both masculinity nor femininity and much prefer a balance of the two.

also re: protester violence: I don't want to get too far into actual political debates, but I think that maybe they're taking all these risks because peaceful protests don't really work. I don't believe violence is 'good' or 'bad', but, rather, do whatever it takes to make your movement successful. as a side note, these days, protester violence doesn't really make a dent into the popularity of these large-scale movements.

as a side note, when we are in the privileged position (idk about you, but I'm white and acknowledge that this is a privilege), who are we to dictate how the oppressed should protest?

"being intolerant to those that are intolerant just perpetuates the issue."

yeah, no. I repeat, it's not an ideological debate of some sort, it's a matter of life and death. when armed fascists barge in to beat the shit out of you, you don't sit down and hold a flower.

suppose you have a community. you decide to be tolerant to everybody, including bigots. then people who are generally targeted by these bigots begin feeling unsafe, and eventually leave. in the end you have created a safe space for bigots.

also, welcome to the club then :P

It should be evident that I can't agree that violence is not good or bad and that I feel any and all violence is bad, and I similarly disagree about peaceful protests not working.

One big issue is that the traditional media likes drama, so they won't cover peaceful protests but will cover violent protests, which would rather point to unbalanced media coverage being the issue. Similarly, drama can be fuel in more polarized environment (see: current US political arena) which similarly tips the publicity scale, which of course results in a vicious cycle of drama fueling polarization fueling drama fueling polarization etc etc which is obviously going to be in the interest of a media that has decided to make a living off of drama.

And I too am white, but I grew up relatively poor financially (as I alluded to, on my mother's side half of the family is white while half is some sort of brown).

Sorry, didn't see the "make and account on the board and PM me" comment before I submitted my most recent comment.

As you say, we could probably move the conversation elsewhere if we wish to continue it - I will just say there was an extremely enlightening article that I read several years back:

dunno about the situation in USA, but here in France, protest movements haven't been gaining anything for years: because they didn't pose any threat, governments just ignored them and carried antisocial reforms for the benefit of the richest. only did the yellow vests movement gain some crumbs because a) it was massive and b) it caused major ruckus, to the point the president himself was scared. you do need to cause quite some disruption at this point if you want actual change -- not the kind of cosmetic change they will give you to calm you down without actually meaning to change anything (think of all the greenwashing campaigns for example).

on the topic of getting bigots to change their mind: been there, done that, esp with transphobes. their arguments are always the same old pile of bullshit, and it's easy to prove them wrong. but generally, rather than admitting defeat, they'll ego-trip and repeat the same bullshit over and over.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that "just ignore them" is a case of "been there, tried that" then?

All I know is that I was picked on a bunch in school, and I was unable to ignore them...but fighting back and/or retaliating also not only didn't work, but actually was worse because I realized later on when, due to external circumstances in which they were no longer in the same physical locations that I was, their entire motive for picking on me was in fact to provoke and get a reaction from me (for this reason, apathy and disinterest, that is "acting boring" rather than ignoring nor retaliating was probably the way to go).

same shit here. 'just ignore them' did not work -- it typically turned into a game of 'how far can we poke and prod her before she blows up? :D :D :D'.

so, what do you do?

eventually get sick of it, strike back, repeatedly do so and get caught and eventually labelled as 'the trouble causer' because authorities don't know shit about bullying. authorities are even complicit in their own way. you get bullied for not being 'normal' enough, and that's a structural issue. kids are taught to be 'better' than others, and shit. what do they do? try to construct themselves by crushing weaker others.

immediate solution? none.

a) escalation. striking back. but then they beat the shit out of you. you try to overpower them, how far does it go? it doesn't end well regardless. you don't want to go on a murderous rampage or anything of that sort.

b) subtracting yourself from the situation entirely. skipping school, attending another school, home schooling, whatever.

I get that people look to video games partially to help escape the grim bits of reality, but this is basically a few lines a person is saying that has absolutely nothing to do with their actual work. It's like refusing to go to a concert because one of the musicians said they were planning on voting for a given party. Jeez.
I still am looking forward to MelonDS's next version and have no sudden changes in my opinion vis a vis MelonDS
Keep up the good work, and thanks for doing so much on this!

Ari I love your work and you're a beautiful person. Thanks for working so hard on this and I'm so sorry you have to deal with basement dwelling racist scum.

A wouldn't say it's "racist policing" so much as "cops going on power trips". I've been a victim of trash that think they're law enforcers and I'm white. They entered my house without a warrant looking for another white guy and even threatened to arrest me because they though I was hiding him. They assumed he was here because they saw one of his vehicles here. Keyword being one because he has multiple vehicles. I played along because I knew he wasn't here.

Anyway, some time later after he was arrested (before this CCP virus mess), he was feeling sick to his stomach and asked to be quarantined. They didn't do it. By the time he got out, one of the officers mentioned he was feeling sick.

Of course, not all cops are bad. Some cops showed up to take him to the hospital recently because of a drug overdose involving medicines he shouldn't have been taking to begin with.

I am most definitely downloading this emulator now since seeing this post. Very hard to see support for me and my people in the gaming community. Big ups!
