I want to play one of my games and stream it, however, first I need to get melonDS running. It seems that I can't because each time I try to use the DSi mode, it tries to boot into normal DS mode, which doesn't have any bios or firmware files saved. How do I force it to boot into DSi mode?

you need to set it to DSi mode in the emulation settings. DSi mode does also require DS-mode BIOSes.

How would I get those files?

you can dump them from a DSi, see the melonDS 0.9 post for the link to the BIOS dumper

I used that one and it crashed instantly. If it matters, I am using a 3ds and the bios/firmware/nand backup was from twlmenu. It is a hacked 3ds.

You need an actual DSi to dump the DSi files.

But I don't and I still managed to do it.

Obtain DSi files from the 3DS

the files you dumped aren't complete. 3DSs only contain minimal DS and DSi firmware files without the menu, as is needed by DS games/DSiWare.

You should be able to dump the DS-mode BIOS off a 3DS with this.
You can then configure the DS files in melonDS, check "Boot game directly" and run your game.

I would agree with you but then again I used homebrew and twlmenu and not any traditional means of getting the bios files.

Edit: came out too late, this went to the first reply. To the second reply, thank you.

how long should the dumping process take and how do I use it?

Dumping the DS-mode BIOSes and firmware barely takes a second. The resulting BIOS files are usable, but the firmware is not so you must have "boot game directly" enabled and melonDS set to DS mode.

Yeah no it crashed yet again. I should probably use an r4 cartridge for that.

If you're starting it through twilightmenu, press Y on the ROM and turn direct boot off.

Ok, I'll do that

Edit: So I've just had an epiphany, I was running it in DSi mode and not DS mode. I will try running it now.

Yet another edit, I just ran it and it's kinda hanging on the first part again. It keeps on displaying Savgin (not gonna say the file name for privacy reasons).bin... and nothing else happens. Any suggestions?

dumping the ds mode bios won't help you get dsi mode working if you already have ds mode bios. you still need the dsi mode bios which you can't dump properly without a dsi.

if you run my DSi BIOS dumper, it's best to run it right after unlaunch, by renaming it to bootcode.dsi and putting it on the SD card. it will then dump both DSi-mode and DS-mode BIOSes.
