I've downloaded melonDS for the first time and when trying to launch the emulator I get the error message explaining that the program can't find the firmware and the BIOS files. I'm new to this and don't have a clue how to remedy this. Appreciate any help

See the FAQ. Also, you may want to use the GitHub Actions builds.

How to write an emulator
1. throw code to be emulated somewhere
2. make memory system that allows accessing that code
3. emulate CPU
4. have fun implementing all the other hardware

I'm having the same problem but i'm tech illiterate i don't know what any of this means or how to "add" or use the code to launch the emulator.
all the faq did was make me more confused. It took me a while to even realize I supposed to use 7z to "extract" the files -.-
bios9.bin - 4KB - ARM9 BIOS
bios7.bin - 16KB - ARM7 BIOS
firmware.bin - 128/256/512KB

melonDS can't run without NDS BIOS

Yep.
You need to dump bios9.bin, bios7.bin and firmware.bin from a DS (or find them from somewhere on the net) and put them in the same directory as the melonDS executable.

What happen when you put a NDSi BIOS on melonds?

if you dumped DS-mode DSi BIOS, you can only boot DS games directly.
however, if you dumped your dsi bios, firmware and nand, you can boot the full dsi firmware.
