I tried pressing System > Stop and System > Run to goof around in pictochat after playing some games but it's just a white screen. It didn't do this first time i accessed the firmware, it worked fine. I love this emulator and it works near flawlessly but i need to doodle badly on the firmware! I tried reopening the program and everything. The fps counter shows up and it goes from black to white when pressing run but i don't see or hear anything! The lid is not closed.

EDIT: Nevermind, i just had crappy firmware. Avoid "Setya"'s. Apparently it, and another whose DS name is "Bill Nye" are not clean and were patched with some sort of software causing them to toast when you change some settings and play a bit and attempt to come back.

yeah, I had a feel that was your issue. (of course not excluding the possibility that melonDS might not reset something properly, but for me Stop->Run always worked fine)

I tried Setya's and older melonDS versions deemed it a modified dump. This was not the case for Bill Nye's, however.

dunno what you mean by 'older melonDS versions'. I added a check for hacked firmwares but it's not been released yet.

also, to clarify about the issue, for Kokonut and everybody else: the hacked firmware breaks when running a game that saves WFC settings, the hack was made before WFC was a thing and relies on some unused firmware space that was later used to store WFC settings. it breaks the same way on hardware (there have been reports of bricked consoles due to this).

I would say something about DeSmuME's garbage method of storing firmware info, but I don't think it's anything like that.

Also, older melonDS versions automatically ran with a console window that would tell you if a dump is a bad or good one, though if I wanted to, I could
a. recompile in RelWithDebInfo mode
b. open Powershell and get it to open and log stuff to a file
to get the same effect with the current versions.

if you run melonDS from console, you get all the console output live

anyway, the 'dump is good/bad' thing just checks the various checksums for things like user settings and wifi data, it can't detect things like the hacked Setya/BillNye firmware

also, curious, what's wrong with the way desmume stores firmware info?

What it basically does is copy the firmware info into its own file, which works differently from the firmware.bin we all know of, and, even though it sometimes does a very bad job at it, loads the firmware information from that file. Said file needed to be 100% intact for the older Wi-Fi builds of DeSmuME to work.

I wonder if the firmware is what causing people to randomly get error 52000...
Because that happens even if after they manage to successfully connect to wifi.

might be. dunno.

I've been browsing for firmware, but all I'm finding are the forbidden Setyas. Anyone know where I can get some good firmware? The DS and 3DS I had stopped working a while back, so I can't just get firmware from those.
